I phoned BW Licensing to arrange a short term licence in the last week
of May and it turned up the next day.

I then went to buy the annual licence (which I buy through my local boat
club as they get a small kickback from BW) on 4th June and said I wanted
it to start from 6th June, immediately after the short term licence
expired. I was told that I wasn't eligible for a prompt payment discount
as it has to start on the first day of the month, even though the boat
was already licensed for the first 5 days. I have queried this with BW
and await the outcome.

The difficulty was that having been out of the water for over a year
doing a major refit and having no current safety certificate until the
evening before I licensed the boat, applying earlier wasn't an option.

Maybe I should have not bothered to licence the boat for the last 2 days
of May and saved myself both the short term licence fee and potentially
£70-odd discount. Who says honesty pays?!
