Maybe among the chattering computer-savvy classes there is opposition. On the towpath I've found almost universal support for them, especially among those who use centre ropes. If people are falling over them, it's only unfamiliarity. The ones at the top and the bottom are just as capable of being tripped over. As indeed is a lock side.
