Hang on a minute!!!  I wasn't *advocating* anything. Malcolm correctly
described how to use a Banbury stick when opening a bridge, but missed
what happened after passing through the bridge.  I merely completed the
description. 

The old boatman's method I described was what really gave the time
advantage, but isn't something I would do today.  Just like I don't let
paddles drop, or routinely leave gates open when I leave locks.
