  I've got a Petter PH2 and there is a speed I
  can't travel slower than (if you see what I
  mean) without taking the boat out of gear (I
  have a speedwheel and gear rod under the
  back cabin roof).

Neutral? You had neutral?? We had an engine which would go into reverse 
on its own if you ran it too slow...
