It was never a narrow canal - but originally it was a typical-sized
early Yorkshire river navigation, taking horse boats 54ft by 14ft.

Possibly not too far out - according to Hadfield's Canals of Yorks &
NE England the A&C Co started a programme of enlargement
from Goole to Castleford to 215ft by 22ft in 1902 ie just too late for
Victoria's reign. (the author doesn't say when the work was
completed) Enlargement of the remainder of the main line from
120ft to 180ft lock length was more recent.
