I'm pleased to be able to announce that there WILL be a GiG (Great Internet Getogether) in 2009. The venue will be the Soar Boating Club at Normanton on Soar (location at: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=451400&Y=323250&A=Y&Z=1 )
and will be held on the weekend before next year's National at Redhill, which is only an hour or three's boating away. There may well be a limit on the number of boats attending - the SBC's Commodore is slightly bothered that they may well get a good number of bookings from AWCC members wanting a handy mooring near to the National. In view of this, we may have to restrict boat numbers to 25 or 30, so when entries are called for you'll have to get your fingers out! For those of you who haven't been, the event is a weekend affair, starting at Friday lunchtime. There are some more-or-less organised events: an "open mike" session on Friday night, some sort of musical entertainment on Saturday night, a barbeque and a Mammoth Chinese Takeaway, traditionally held on Sunday night. There is also a quiz and an auction, and there has been a cruise in the past - we went to Loughborough in 2001. Unorganised events (like the tea party) also happen. There is plenty of room for those who want to attend with tents and caravans, and the SBC lay on a very good bar, with guest ales. We usually get to drink these dry.................... I'm happy to act as co-ordinator with SBC, but we'll be needing a Harbourmaster, Camping Field Supervisor, Quiz Setter and TakeawayMeister at the very least so if you wish to volunteer, let us know. We'll also need somebody to design and produce the GiG logowear and mug. I look forward to a cracking weekend! Brian L Dominic Web Sites: Canals: http://www.brianscanalpages.co.uk
