There are also reports of trials in which dummies with lifejackets got
stuck in the sluices of locks whereas the unprotected were swept
through.

But perhaps the hazard depends on the likelihood of your suffering a
particular type of fall.

... a bit like seatbelts, in cars ... you never know if they will be any 
good, until after the crash  (who hates seatbelts!!)

As others have said .... When single handing, always take your time. I 
usually open just the one paddle (on the boat side of the lock) when I am in 
a wide lock, on my own
