That's a good point. I did an engine service sometime after the drive
plate was replaced, which happened to include a gearbox oil change.
The gearbox was very low indeed then - I wonder if it had been
drained and not refilled, and had been running on what was left in
the bottom until I refilled it. Then my refill would drop by the
amount needed to refill the heat exchanger. (Have just been rung by
Peter Mason at Braidbar who did the drive plate - this isn't the
answer, as he didn't drain the gearbox.)

Not as far as I can see, and although there's a bit of oil in the
engine bilge, it's not half a litre's worth. I'll check the drain
plug again though. Similarly, there's no sign of oil in the coolant,
Beeky, and no frothy scum under the rocker cover as you'd expect if
the oil was coolant contaminated.

I wondered about that, but then wouldn't I see a rise in the level on
the main dipstick? It's just as it was after my service.
