Yes it is a real address but it is not a dedicated address for your 
machine. Vodafone proxy it for multiple users. Hence you can't connect 
back to it from the outside world, which is what I am trying (and 
failing) to do.

Coincidentally my current public address is 212.183.136.193, which was 
your last one. Small world :-)

The main practical annoyance of address sharing when I'm connecting from 
the boat to the outside world is that some servers don't allow multiple 
connections from the same IP address so I can for example go to 
rapidshare.com and be booted off because it thinks I'm already 
downloading something when in reality its a different user on the 
Vodafone network.
