My church website has had a few high number of hits recently, but I put that down to Google, etc, bots crawling over it to speed up searches. The more links you have into your site, the higher the priority you get when the site is listed. If you have many links out the bots have to crawl through the Internet checking, counting and indexing the sites attached to yours. These crawling sessions tend to happen every so often and get particularly high when Google, Yahoo, Ask, etc, all start one off about the same day.
