Certainly works at the Rugby Tesco. It seems to be an induction loop
in the pavement that triggers the release of a powerfully sprung
brake shoe.

At Rugby, if you ask at the customer service desk, they'll find the
trolley lad and get him to go with you to the exit towards the cut.
After the wheel has locked, you drag it clear of the loop and he
applies his gizmo to unlock the wheel. When you take the trolley back
after unloading, it locks up again as you approach the entrance.

On one occasion we were told that the gizmo wasn't working. We took
our trolley and a spare with us, and at the exit, pushed the loaded
one over the line until it locked. The lad than lifted the empty one
over his head and carried it clear of the line; when he put it down
it didn't lock, and we transferred the load to it and took it to the
boat. That's why I reckon it must be a loop in the ground.

ISTR a previous thread on this list agreed that the TV detector vans
were a con trick. In reality, they were used as cover for covert
surveillance exercises, I believe.

There are no strangers on the cut, only boaters we've yet to meet.
