Personally I would say it's essential - think how much you're spending! I'd also get them to do a BSC check whilst they're on, any remedial work needed is a good negotiation point. One of our local surveyors once did a pre-purchase survey on a two year old boat from a very expensive and reputable builder. He advised them not to buy it as he couldn't be sure it wouldn't fall in half - literally - due the appalling welding (plates butt jointed with no chamfers then the welds ground off both sides).
