The bottom lock of the flight (nearest to the Fox) has working side ponds, and can be used with a normal windlass(large square). There are only two levels of side ponds on this one, but I think higher ones have three. When we went through the next pound up from the bottom was very low, so filled the lock from what little was in the top side pond. I explained to the boat following how to use them (experienced boater), but not sure if he did use them properly. When you have a boat thats nearly 3.5ft deep you need to ensure pounds are well topped up. I didn't ground futher up the flight and water needed to be let down.
