Just thought I'd add my three penn'orth to the ponds/pounds thread.
Walking down to "The Fox'' @ Hanwell on Sunday last to enjoy a pint of "Special
FX" we noted that some of the pounds were low--by as much as two feet. When
boating down this Ealing flight [location mentioned for those that aren't
familiar with Hanwell] I've often noticed low pounds/overflowing water in
sequences that don't make sense. In the same way a lock could be full & the
next empty [?] No boat is #supposed# to stop in the flight but sometimes it
seems to offer the only solution as to why the levels are the way they are.
Side ponds are in evidence but are never used in my 25 years on the waterways,
they just merely serve to be exotic locations for pond-life, so I don't think
they influence things one way or the other.
Reading great tracts from those of you with greater knowledge than
I re ponds/pounds makes my head spin but they're informative all the same.
I can remember a back-pumping system [?] being installed @ Hanwell about ten
years ago to prevent the towpath being regularly flooded & I #thought# to
prevent the imbalance of water I saw on Sunday---obviously not!
Finally, it's amusing to see my original ''Shades of the 3 Horse Shoes''
threadline prefacing a lot of the argument & debate. A newcomer to the list
would think ''What on earth is the connection to side ponds etc?''
I wonder what the record is for a title to remain above postings, either in
time or number of postings?
