Some years ago between Norton Junction and Braunston there were a large
number of fishermen with carp poles and we had the procession as each one
raised his in the air. I suddenly realized that the next one appeared to be
unattended and slammed on full reverse stopping about three feet from the
rod. At which point the owner sprinted up the towpath full of apologies and
thanking me for stopping. And saving his several hundred ponds worth of
pole.
