I have one of these http://www.marinemegastore.com/product.asp?pf_id=XM_184780&jump=0&cat_id= it can be folded flat or if you have a socket next to the base can be disconnected and removed. To give you some idea of range I can talk to London VTS easily from just below Teddington but it is 3m above the water level.
