I have one of these

it can be folded flat or if you have a socket next to the base can be 
disconnected and removed.
To give you some idea of range I can talk to London VTS easily from just 
below Teddington but it is 3m above the water level.

With my RF tech hat on
One word of warning if the antenna is more than 15ft from the radio make 
sure that the cabling internal to the boat for the antenna is run in 
RG213 to minimise losses.
