And thanks for that ! Fortunately I've brought the chimneys & exhausts  
home and I'm working in the "integral" garage (no Uncle Mort hasn't  
got a garage)  so temperature and humidity are not an issue.

What I've done is - whether it's advisable or not

1) Had the components sandblasted and gloss black powder coated,  
including those nasty brass bands
2) Sprayed a heat resistant red oxide primer over all the band area
3) Painted the whole band area with red mason's paint, by brush. It  
needs a second coat

Then (the reason for my question)

4) Mask the bits I want to stay red so I can hand paint those brass  
bits cream. At least 2 coats

Then I'll have a set of matching "funnels" with red between cream  
bands. And no polishing !
