Yes, they are very common these days but there have to be very stringent hardware and software conditions placed upon the system to ensure there isn't a runaway. From memory, the potentiometer on the throttle pedal tends to have two tracks and the sytem constantly compares one track against the other to ensure that if one track is lying the other acts as a check and prevents a potential disaster........and that is only one piece of the hardware. Then you have the software and cabling that stand between that and the motor that drives the throttle plate. The whole engine management systems on cars is very complex these days and, hence, the opportunity for errors and strange results. Luckily the systems don't crash as often as PCs seem to do ;-))) Roger
