For now, forget about your download speed - for which you do need to be 
connected to the far side.

The numbers that are most useful are probably those held in the modem itself, 
which you can see by logging in.

With a NetgearDG834, you should be able to point your browser at the router's 
IP address, and then login as "admin" with "password" as password.

Then, at the bottom, there will be a button for "Show statistics".

That should throw up a table, and the connection-speed, line-attenuation, and 
noise-margin figures will be shown for both uplink & downlink.
