When I came down the flight last year I found that by leaving a lock at a reasonable speed, but winding up the throttle when the boat was about half way out, enough water would build up behind the boat and get behind the gates that getting on for half the time both gates would shut on their own. It does, of course, help if you have already set the next lock so that you can go straight in :-)
