The retracer.py script, and by extension apport-retrace, has a --verbose option. This unfortunately isn't exposed in the charm, but it should be easy enough to hack into the upstart job. Might give you a bit more information.
I haven't managed to get to sorting a Canonistack deployment just yet. Dave, one thing worth trying, though it's really a shot in the dark, is to use a later version of apport.
