Ubuntu 11.10 worked fine. I have tried the usual update methods with
Synaptic, etc and used sudo apt-get. My computer processor is about 2.2
GHz and memory 1.5 GB. Firefox and Chrome give the error message that
ShockWave has crashed or needs updating.
I am using version 12.04 LTS.
This fault is widely reported and there seem to be no simple solutions.

Since upgrading to 12.04 flash player does not work in either Firefox or
Chrome. No method suggested works including reinstalling Ubuntu 12.04. I also
find it impossible to update Java which Firefox says it has stopped because it
is out of date. update
