Thanks so much for the advice, Seiji -- José's advice of adding
(setq mac-input-method-mode nil)
to my .emacs worked but I tried your (1) and (2) as well. (1) seems
to work; (2) didn't work when I instantiated it as
(setq default-input-method 'cyrillic-jcuken)
Unfortunately I may have just been converted to Aquamacs...
