Pete, in both 22.0.97 and 22.1.50, the default-frame-alist is ((foreground-color . "black") (background-color . "white") (tool-bar-lines . 0) (menu-bar-lines . 1) (right-fringe) (left-fringe . 0)) and the initial-frame-alist is nil. No setting of faces.
As I said before, I have not changed anything (.emacs or .emacs.custom), except emacs.app. So the difference must presumably be in there.
