You could install a standard X11 emacs distribution (using MacPorts
http://www.macports.org/  for example) but ...

Why don't you just install Carbon Emacs on your laptop, share the
folders/files from you workstation, and edit the files over the net from the
laptop.  I guarantee you will be happier with this solution (in terms of
speed and convenience) than running X over the net.
