I think I have now the final truth: I can't reproduce the issue in  
GNU Emacs 21.3.50, 23.0.50 and 23.0.60 when I launch them with -Q,  
but 23.0.0 and 22.1.50 show it! On this latter version Carbon Emacs  
is based. Except of tabbar-mode it also happens in supported ruler- 
mode and info-mode. The solution seems to be easy: update some ELisp  
and/or some C file(s)! The big question is: which one(s)? I don't  
understand enough how these areas on top of the window contents are  
created and where the functions come from, so I'm out now ...
