Another possibility is VM (View Mail): http://www.nongnu.org/viewmail/ I use it in conjunction with msmtp (http://msmtp.sourceforge.net/) for sending mail to SMTP servers (it even does authenticated SMTP, which is essential for me), fetchmail (http://fetchmail.berlios.de/) for downloading mail from IMAP servers, and a Mac OS X application for displaying whether mail has been received or remains queued waiting to be sent. More information about how everything can be put together can be found at http://people.cis.ksu.edu/~stough/emacs-vm-mac/index.html. Unfortunately, it takes some work to get everything installed and configured.
