Reading Peter and Felix comments I can see that what I propose may not  
work. But if you are running Terminal in Leopard I have had great  
success with playing with "keyboard" under Preferences -> Settings.  
Here you can decide what keys should be sent to the shell. That way I  
have managed to get some keys to work.

As an aside, I use C-l all the time, especially over ssh :)
