Hi LWD, P.senthilruban,

Thanks for the info. I am still in the definition phase of the project and I
don't have a network, and it will take a while for a project of this size.

We have planed on using optical backbones (every floor 1 cable) so for a .
building with 5 floors I would have 5 cables going verticaly. Perhaps I can
separate the cables on each floor and plug them into a switch thereby
getting spanning tree protocol sort of connection.

Here is what I came up with (don't know if it would work) and correct me if
it looks stupid.
m. = master
s. = slave

client  -------- m.director ----- m.app server ----- m.director - m.DB
                 s.director       s.app server       s.director   s.DB
                                  m.file server
                                  s.file server
                                  DHCP/DNS/LDAP server
                                  sendmail server

                      b  a  c  k  u  p    s  e  r  v  e  r

This configuration looks like RAID1, but I am not sure if the DB part will
work I have never tried something like this nor have I seen it.
Does it make sence to make something like this...

Out of this, how many servers do I need for about 1100 workstations and
ensuring 24/7 work, can I optimize this.. what do you suggest.
I was planing on using Ultramonkey (did not work with it either but I need
something that is easy to implement)

What type of servers do you recomend and what hardware configuration for
each of those above.
I was planing on using hardware raid0+1(raid 10) or raid 5, why do you
suggest software raid.

I am a mySQL person... is postgres better than mysql for this amount of
data, what about replication? If I have a Raid10 with 4 x 146 GB SCSI = 296
GB isn't that enough for about 20.0000.000 records??? What about MaxDB???
any expirience with it?

I am planing all the steps neccesary and my biggest problem are the servers.
I want to build a bullet proof thing so that I can focus more on CARE2x.
I was planing to write an white paper after I do all the planing.

thanks for your help guys
