Unfortunately it didn't make a difference. The other user is not root but a 
normal user.

To have the (almost) identical setup I started up to xterms (tcsh as login 
shell). As I personally use the bash there shouldn't be too many environment 
differences.
In these 2 xterms I did slogin localhost and slogin [EMAIL PROTECTED] to 
rule out hardware GLX influence.
Still no problem as other user but problems "as me".
I deleted ~/.qt -> no change
I copied ~/.qt from the other user -> no change.

checked with env -> no difference (other home dir of course but nothing else)
setenv LANG C also didn't help
strace also didn't give me better information
any ideas what I could do?
