As I am sick at home I only could try that patch on my notebook (also debian stable but even more backports) on which I had the same problems. Guess what it worked here. I still get the messages: failed rendering glyph 0 from font failed rendering glyph 1 from font failed rendering glyph 2 from font failed rendering glyph 3 from font ... but at least the program stays alive. I'll test on the other computer ASAP.
