Jed, I ran into numerous insurmountable problems trying to compile Caret on a Mac with a PowerPC processor.
There is a PowerPC version of Caret from last September that you can try. It is available in "http://brainmap.wustl.edu/pub/john/"; (use the username "pub" and the password "download").
