Mike,
Try projecting the borders, if they weren't already projected (Layers:
Borders: Project, making sure the inflated is in the main window). Then
try saving as a borderproj.
You should be able to save as either, but the border will only be
visible on the reference surface (inflated).
I'm not sure this will solve it, but it's easy to try.
