Hi Matt,

The indices in the paint file will correspond to the vertex-paint-index
mappings, but are independent of the volume, unless the paint names match,
which is how the area color file will join them, so to speak.

To find out the volume label lookup, try this in a terminal window:

grep LUT Macaque.F99UA1.BOTH.LewisVE00.HEAD

The ordinal positions of the label names should correspond to the indices
in the BRIK.  At least my rusty memory thinks so.
