I think it's a bigger issue that we're depending on external test fixtures for unit tests. It's entirely possible that at some future date Rutgers will put in IP filtering to reject requests external to their network. While I'd admit that SSL tends to be the most brittle of external test dependencies, it's only on variation. I'd like us to consider ridding ourselves of external dependencies altogether. As for alternatives, I spoke with Eric Dalquist a couple of times about leveraging some EC2 infrastructure that belongs to Jasig to host OpenLDAP, but it never went anywhere.
