Two problems with ApacheDS: 1. I know nothing about it and have a sense it's non-trivial. 2. Doesn't support some features we might want to test. IIRC at one time it didn't support DIGEST-MD5, which is an auth method we might want. I really don't think either of the above is that big of a deal in fairness and an embedded directory is probably what we should invest in.
