If no one has a preference either way, I'm for removing them. We always use the default views in the demo WAR, and the default views are a good example of how a production page should be set up (minus the Internationalization stuff).
I'll give it a few more days to see if anyone chimes in with a strong opinion for or against. If no one does, then I'll put in a JIRA issue to remove them so we can focus our efforts on maintaining and improving one set of views. If someone wants to volunteer to provide patches for the simple views when views are changed/added, that's also an option.
