There has been much discussion of the ClearPass solution on the list lately, http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/CAS/Proxying+clear-text+credentials, which claims to do this securely. It is currently under consideration to become an incubating project where it could become a CAS component in the future, but at present it's an exercise for the reader to determine how to integrate it with CAS. Maybe someone else has some good links to supplement the above for integration instructions.
