We wrote that stuff back in the day before JQuery and haven't really touched the UI much since. We're targeting an overhaul of it for 3.7 (though based on the work I'm doing it may come up sooner). We'd gladly accept a patch to improve that piece. If you're a UI/User Experience wizard and interested in helping out more with the UI, let me know ;-)
