If I were doing it all over again I'd go with memcached. The simplicity of the software and integration is very appealing to me personally, but it may not be for everyone. You should search the cas-user list archives for a lengthy discussion I posted in the past quarter where I argued that memcached alone is sufficient. It goes into further details of the limitations/caveats of a memcached-only solution. I'd recommend staying away from Tomcat session clustering if you can avoid it; IMO it provides little bang for substantial buck in terms of complexity.
