I've also been seeing these messages in catalina.out for every authentication
and been unable to configure them away.

I totally agree we need to fix this soon. It's clearly an issue for a
number of folks, including myself, and there needs to be a
straightforward facility for either turning it off or sending it
somewhere else than STDOUT. I've created the following issue to track a
resolution:

I marked this one for 3.5. I'll try to work up a patch this week.
