I totally agree we need to fix this soon. It's clearly an issue for a number
of folks, including myself, and there needs to be a straightforward facility
for either turning it off or sending it somewhere else than STDOUT. I've
created the following issue to track a resolution:

I marked this one for 3.5. I'll try to work up a patch this week.

I hadn't seen CAS-994 so good to read the background.
I quite like the fact of it logging authentication performance, I just want to
be able to turn it on/off and route it's output somewhere sensible.
