Not strange at all...CAS is enjoyed by millions the world over. Why should your customer be any different! :)
True that CAS primarily is SSO for the Web and works well out of the box with a plethora of web based platforms and development environments (or as I like to say from ASP to Zope - http://tinyurl.com/nm5ucb5). Also true the folks have extended CAS into other non-web browser scenarios and used the CAS REST interfaces (https://wiki.jasig.org/display/casum/restful+api) at least for authentication and ability to use proxy tickets (http://lanyrd.com/2013/apereo/schwdr/). I'm also aware of mechanisms to bridge WebSSO between traditional web applications and client-server-delivered-in-the-browser applications (e.g. AJAX, Java Web Start, Flash, etc) as well as strategies for native mobile applications. I don't believe any of these are formally written up, but you may want to search the mailing list archives. Whether and how you might bridge SSO sessions largely depends on the application and your ability to interact with its context.
