It might depend on what your exact setup is, and although it might be
easier to only go to 3.5.3 (since it's the same major version), going
to 4.0.1 shouldn't be bad, and will get you to the latest version.  We
recently went from 3.4.12 to 4.0.1, and although it was more like a
complete re-installation rather than an upgrade, it wasn't bad at all.

Actually, 4.1 has some differences and looks interesting, so it might
be good to wait for that -- although I don't know how soon that's
supposed to be released.
