It's much better to use plain old tcp/ip or udp/ip, there is very little overhead and networks are able to route it anywhere without any special definitions. We have recent experience of other people trying to use vlans and lightpaths, after one year connection is still not working. We did the same with udp/ip, worked immediately at double the speed.
