Hi Andrea There was a time (v7 tools) when both the iBOB and ROACH were supported by the toolflow. The Virtex5 architecture offers various optimisations not available in Virtex2. These optimisations required setting up various signal processing blocks in specific ways (e.g if a multiplier is followed by an adder and both are configured in a specific way, the compiler will pack both into a DSP48E block, saving a lot of logic).
We try to maintain backwards compatibility where possible. The move we are about to make to the latest Xilinx software versions to support ROACH2 will mean that we can't support the old Virtex2 architecture with the same build environment anymore. People will have to have multiple versions of the toolflow installed to support all CASPER architectures at that point.
