Root ("root") works for us, without a password on the standard (as of
December-ish) NFS file system. Is your minicom set with the proper parity
settings?
Can you look at your shadow file on the NFS file system with another
machine and make sure root doesn't have a password someone added?
On our machine, root's shadow line looks like:
root::10000:0:99999:7:::
Note the empty 2nd field...
