Dear all,

Please find below a call for papers for an upcoming special issue in JAI,
which may be of interest. The topic is “Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
in Radio Astronomy”, so will be relevant to most CASPERites.

The submission deadline is June 15. It would be great to see CASPER
instrumentation well represented!

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Regards
Danny

The Journal of Astronomical Instrumentation (JAI) is pleased to issue a call
for
contributions to an upcoming special issue on “Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
in Radio Astronomy."

Advances in astronomy are intimately linked to advances in DSP. The trend
within radio astronomy is to use off-the-shelf digital hardware where possible
and leverage advances in high performance computing. In particular, graphics
processing units (GPUs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are being
used in place of application-specific circuits (ASICs); high-speed Ethernet
and Infiniband are being used for interconnect in place of custom backplanes.
Further, to lower hurdles in digital engineering, communities have designed and
released general-purpose FPGA-based DSP systems, such as the CASPER ROACH,
ASTRON Uniboard and CSIRO Redback board, as well as design specifications
such as PowerMX.

The special issue will focus on the following topics:

• ASIC, FPGA and GPU-based digital processing;
• Digital sampling advances;
• New DSP for radio telescopes;
• Algorithms for FPGAs and GPUs;
• Performance measurements and metrics for DSP systems; and
• Comparative development cost studies.

Submissions for this special issue will be accepted until June 15th 2016.

All papers will undergo thorough refereeing, in accordance with the journal’s
standard review process. If you require help with the submission process,
please contact [email protected]
; for questions regarding the scope of the special issue and matters of
content, please reach out to one or more of the guest editors directly.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Yours sincerely,
The Guest Editors
