The research group of Professor Ben Mazin (mazinlab.org) at UC Santa Barbara 
seeks an Assistant Project Scientist who is a talented observational astronomer 
and instrumentationalist to help build and use cutting edge visible and near-IR 
superconducting instrumentation for Astrophysics.
The successful applicant must hold a PhD in Physics, Astronomy or a closely 
related field. The successful applicant will be skilled at mechanical and 
optical design and finite element modeling using computer assisted design 
tools, especially Autodesk Inventor and Zemax. Experience with project 
management on complex scientific instruments would be useful. A proven 
scientific publication record and experience with complex data analysis would 
be useful.
The successful applicant will make significant and creative contributions as 
part of a team involving graduate students, post-docs, faculty, and 
professional engineers to build instruments for the largest telescopes in the 
world. The successful applicant will assist in commissioning these instruments 
in the field.
We are looking for someone truly talented at building things with a proven 
track record and a keen interest in Astrophysics to contribute their high-level 
skills to this project. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and 
experience in accordance with University of California policy. Initial 
appointment is one year with extensions granted contingent on performance. 
Longer term employment is likely.
