Hi all,

Please find below details of the upcoming Breakthrough Listen internship
program, which would be a great opportunity for a CASPERite to get research
experience at one of the project's many collaborating institutions.

Happy holidays!

Jack

Dear colleagues,

Applications are invited for paid undergraduate summer research
internships at Berkeley SETI Research Center for summer 2022. BSRC is a
world-leader in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence – the quest
for a scientific answer to one of humanity’s oldest questions: Are we
alone in the Universe? With a core team based at the University of
California, Berkeley, and additional team members and collaborators
around the globe, the team at BSRC leads the science program for the
$100-million Breakthrough Listen project. Our scientists and engineers
are pioneers in the development of software, instrumentation, and
science strategy for the search for intelligent life on other worlds. We
have access to substantial amounts of time on the planet’s largest
telescopes, connections to leading players in industry, and we’re based
in one of the world’s premiere research universities. We’re also psyched
that we get to wake up each day and hunt for aliens.

Past students have been involved in a diverse range of projects
including technosignature searches at optical and radio wavelengths,
developing machine learning approaches to identify anomalies in data,
studying fast radio bursts, deploying new scalable algorithms on cloud
computing platforms, and working hands-on with the GNU Radio platform to
develop new data acquisition and processing methods. Many of our
students have gone on to PhDs in astronomy and computer science; others
are working in industry including at some of the major tech firms.

This year, in addition to 10 - 12 positions in the US, we are recruiting
1 - 2 students at each of three international partner institutions -
Jodrell Bank / University of Manchester, I-LOFAR / Trinity College
Dublin, and the Sardinia Radio Telescope / INAF.

For the positions in the US, current sophomore, junior, and senior
undergraduates (including non-US citizens studying at a degree-granting
institution in the US) are eligible to apply. A stipend of $8873, plus
support for travel to and from the internship site, will be provided.
Positions are funded by the National Science Foundation Research
Experience for Undergraduates program and by the Breakthrough Prize
Foundation. Women, underrepresented minorities, transfer students, and
others traditionally underrepresented in science are strongly encouraged
to apply.

At this time, we anticipate that the US program will mainly take place
in-person in the UC Berkeley area. In the event that pandemic
restrictions make this impractical, we expect, as we did successfully in
summer 2020, to pivot to an online program. We may also be able to offer
remote participation, or participation at partner institutions or
telescopes (e.g. Hat Creek Radio Observatory), to a limited number of
applicants. Since the situation is rapidly evolving, we are not asking
applicants to commit to a particular method of participation at this
stage; final details will be confirmed at the offer stage.

Details and links to the application form (deadline February 11) are at

where you can also find details of the application procedure and stipend
amounts for the positions in the UK, Ireland, and Italy.

Please circulate to colleagues and students who may be interested. Feel
free to forward this email, and / or to share our social media posts
